Abstract
This essay provides an introduction to the recent volume about the object of the history of philosophy, a volume which originated from an international conference held at the university of Salerno in 1996. The chief problem it puts into focus is the relationship between historiographic reconstruction and the interpretative categories that guide it. Other problems which the history of philosophy must face, however, are not ignored: from that of its more general relationship with historical life, the background against which every reflection is silhouetted, to that of its relationships, which have become closer and closer, with the history of culture, of the sciences, of art and of literature
